Estimating Intergenerational Schooling E¤ects via Conditional Second Moment Restrictions
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates the degree of intergenerational transmission of education over a sample of respondents in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979. Rather than employing instrumental variables procedures to estimate the causal e¤ect of parental education we identify it by exploiting the feature of the educational transmission mechanism that is responsible for its endogeneity. More explicitly, we assume that the transfer of unobserved ability is invariant to the individuals economic environment. Our estimates suggest that the observed intergenerational link between parents and childrens education levels primarily reects the transfer of unobserved ability. Only for the mother-daughter relationship do we nd a causal e¤ect of parental education. JEL: C31, J62

This paper demonstrates the extensive scope of an alternative to standard instrumental variables methods, namely covariate-based methods, for identifying and estimating e¤ects of interest in general structural systems. As we show, commonly used econometric methods, speci cally parametric, semi-parametric, and nonparametric extremum or moment-based methods, can all exploit covariates to estimate...
متن کاملEmpirical Likelihood - Based Inference in Conditional Moment Restriction Models
This paper proposes an asymptotically efficient method for estimating models with conditional moment restrictions. Our estimator generalizes the maximum empirical likelihood estimator (MELE) of Qin and Lawless (1994). Using a kernel smoothing method, we efficiently incorporate the information implied by the conditional moment restrictions into our empirical likelihood-based procedure. This yiel...
متن کاملTesting for Nonnested Conditional Moment Restrictions via Conditional Empirical Likelihood
We propose non-nested tests for competing conditional moment resctriction models using a method of empirical likelihood. Our tests are based on the method of conditional empirical likelihood developed by Kitamura, Tripathi and Ahn (2004) and Zhang and Gijbels (2003). By using the conditional implied probabilities, we develop three non-nested tests: the moment encompassing, Cox-type, and effcien...
متن کاملThe e ect of parents' schooling on child's schooling: A nonparametric bounds analysis
A strong positive relation between parents' schooling and child's schooling does not necessarily re ect a causal relation. The recent empirical literature has used di erent approaches to identify intergenerational schooling e ects and produces contradictory ndings. This paper uses a new approach to investigate the e ect of parents' schooling on child's schooling: a nonparametric bounds analysis...
